When developing our steel well seals, Boshart carefully examined the products already available on the market. After evaluating numerous seal designs, we identified several common issues that can affect installation, performance, and long-term reliability.
Using these findings, we developed the Boshart WSS Series with improvements designed to make installation easier and provide a more dependable seal.
Below are some of the key features and design improvements incorporated into Boshart steel well seals.
One challenge with some competitor seals is that the well coupling can interfere with other components during installation. Boshart WSS seals are designed with adequate clearance to properly accommodate the coupling, helping ensure a smoother installation process.
On many competitor seals, the coupling rests directly on the bolt heads, making it difficult to access and tighten the bolts when needed. Boshart WSS seals are specifically designed with clearance around the coupling area, allowing installers easy access to the bolt heads during installation and maintenance.
Multiple seal on the market use fully threaded bolts. This creates a potential spiral water passage through the rubber seal and, in many cases, the bolts fit loosely through the rubber gland. These design issues can result in seal failure.
Boshart WSS Seals use half-thread bolts that fit snugly through the rubber gland while providing a smooth sealing surface. This design ensures:
Some well seals have wire holes in the steel plates that partially cover the corresponding hole in the rubber seal. Others have wire holes that are not properly aligned between the steel plates and the rubber gasket. Both situations can create sharp contact points that may damage or cut pump cable insulation.
Boshart WSS Series Seals feature 100% alignment between the steel plates and rubber gaskets, helping protect pump cable insulation during installation and operation.
Our larger conduit openings make it possible to install flat jacketed pump cable without removing the protective PVC jacket. This helps provide greater installation flexibility and help preserve cable protection.
A reliable seal starts with a quality gasket.
Boshart steel well seals utilize 1" thick rubber gaskets manufactured from soft rubber to provide a positive seal and dependable performance.
The 4" x 2" and 6" x 3" HD well seals have raised supports which the drop pipe fitting rests on. This keeps the well coupling fitting above the bolt heads and conduit bushing, making it possible to incorporate a 3/4" cable hole on the 4" x 2" and 1" cable hole on the 6" x 3". This cable hole is larger than on competitors seals.
Boshart uses closed or welded eyebolts which are installed through the entire seal in order to support the weight of the pump on the upper thick plate in the event of pipe failure. Testing has shown that this system is far superior to the competitions eye bolts which are often open eye bolts. These are often threaded into the thin lower plate of the seal and tests show that this method of eyebolt installation does not provide sufficient weight load holding protection.
Every design feature in the Boshart WSS Series was developed with the installer in mind. From improved bolt access and cable protection to larger conduit openings and stronger load-support systems, these enhancements help simplify installation while delivering dependable sealing performance.
