Pressure Switch I have totally messed up my pressure switch settings! Now what?

Uh Oh! Messed Up Your Pressure Switch Settings?

Here’s How to Fix It

We’ve all been there — you start tweaking your pressure switch settings and before you know it, nothing seems to work the way it should. Don’t panic! You’re not the first (and definitely not the last) person to throw their pressure switch out of whack while trying to make an adjustment.

Let’s walk through what’s happening — and how to get things back on track.

This BoshartU blog is based off of our Knowledge Base article, I have totally messed up my pressure switch settings! Now what?. Read it here.

Understanding Your Pressure Switch

Your pressure switch has two main settings:

  • Cut-in pressure: The point where your pump turns on.

  • Cut-out pressure: The point where your pump turns off.

Here’s the key thing to remember:

👉 Adjusting the cut-in setting CAN change the differential (the difference between cut-in and cut-out). The change is usually not significant, but it can occur.

For example, if you increase the cut-in pressure by 10 psi, the cut-out pressure will typically increase by about the same amount - but that amount could be slightly different.

Most problems happen when people try to adjust the differential setting. The differential controls only the cut-out pressure — not the cut-in. So if you change the differential, only the cut-out value moves.

How to Get Back to Factory Settings

If your pressure switch is acting up, it might be easiest to start fresh and reset it to the factory settings.

To do that, you’ll want to check the position of the adjustment nuts. The factory settings are based on specific nut positions, and you can measure them to reset things.

The easiest way?

Use a digital vernier to measure from the top of the threaded image-png-Jul-28-2022-07-07-06-17-PMadjustment post to the top of the adjustment nut. The charts below have the dimensions and approximate number of exposed threads above the nut for resetting a pressure switch to approximately the factory setting.

Once you’ve reset everything, you can start making fine-tuned adjustments again — this time with confidence!
